Grant applications for hedge laying projects in England have surged, with the ancient craft ranking among the four most popular categories of capital grants selected by farmers from a government fund of £225 million allocated this year for environmental improvements. Hedge laying, which involves restoring and reviving mature hedges using techniques that peaked in the 18th and 19th centuries, is being used to boost wildlife, capture carbon, and help tackle flooding.
