Expert Says Canada Could Offer EU a More Reliable Energy Export Route Amid Trade Diversification Push
Speaking to FRANCE 24, a Westminster Business School academic said Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is deliberately diversifying trade policy, pointing to a rise in Canadian oil exports to Europe last year.
Canada could serve as a more reliable route for energy exports to the European Union as it seeks to diversify its trade relationships, according to Dr. Walaa-Eldeen Bakry, Principal Lecturer in Project Management and Finance and Director of Executive Education at Westminster Business School.
In an interview with FRANCE 24's Mark Owen, Bakry said Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is "deliberately aiming to diversify the Canadian trade policy." He argued that this shift could open new opportunities for energy trade between Canada and Europe.
"It can actually offer a more reliable route in terms of energy exports from Canada into the EU," Bakry told FRANCE 24, adding that "we have seen last year a significant increase in oil exports to some European countries."
Bakry's comments were made in the context of broader discussions about Canada's trade strategy under Carney's leadership. The interview did not specify further details on the scale of the export increase or which European countries were involved.
