Europe's Joint Fighter Jet Ambitions Falter as France and Germany Program Collapses
A years-long effort to build a shared next-generation combat aircraft has unravelled, raising questions about Europe's ability to pool defence resources even as the UK and Italy push ahead with their own project.

Europe's push to develop next-generation fighter jets through cross-border collaboration has hit a major setback, according to a report by The Guardian, after France and Germany abandoned their joint future combat air system program in June.
The initiative, which had been underway since 2018, was intended to produce a shared combat aircraft that would allow the two countries to split costs and technology rather than each developing separate national programs. According to the report, talks between German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron collapsed after what the Guardian described as "fraught efforts" to align on the project.
The setback comes despite calls from figures including former European Central Bank president and former Italian prime minister Mario Draghi, who has argued that European nations should pool defence spending and technology rather than each country building its own version of military hardware such as boats, tanks or jets, the report said.
By contrast, the report noted that a separate defence collaboration between the United Kingdom and Italy is making progress, suggesting that smaller groupings of countries may find it easier to align on joint defence projects than larger initiatives involving Europe's biggest economies.
The report said the prospect of additional countries joining together on future fighter jet development now appears distant, raising broader questions about the feasibility of pan-European defence cooperation at a time when the continent faces pressure to modernize its military capabilities and reduce reliance on external suppliers.
The Guardian's report did not specify the reasons cited by French or German officials for the collapse of the joint program, nor did it detail what alternative plans, if any, the two countries may pursue for their own fighter jet development going forward.
