EU Will Not Accept Recognition of Russian-Occupied Ukrainian Territory, Landsbergis Says
Lithuania’s foreign minister said the European Union would reject any imposed settlement on Ukraine that includes recognition of Russian-occupied territory.
The European Union will not accept an imposed deal on Ukraine that includes recognition of territories occupied by Russia, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said, according to Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform.
Landsbergis said Europe would reject any settlement forced upon Ukraine that legitimizes Russia’s control over Ukrainian land seized during the war, Ukrinform reported.
The statement comes amid ongoing discussions among Western allies about the terms of any future negotiated end to the conflict, which Russia launched with its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Ukrinform did not provide further details on the context of the remarks, including where or when they were made, or additional comments from Landsbergis on the matter.
Ukraine and its Western partners have repeatedly stated that any peace settlement must respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, rejecting proposals that would formalize Russian control over occupied regions.
