EU Defence Commissioner Says Peacetime Rules Must Be Overhauled

The European Union must review rules that were designed for peacetime and build a much stronger "European architecture" of collective defence capable of deterring threats to the continent, according to Andrius Kubilius, the EU official overseeing defence matters, as reported by Ukrinform.

Kubilius said that existing regulations governing defence procurement and cooperation were created under different circumstances and are no longer adequate given the current security environment in Europe, according to the report.

He called for simplifying EU defence procedures as part of a broader effort to strengthen the bloc's collective ability to respond to and deter security threats, Ukrinform reported.
