Erdogan: Türkiye and US must stay in close dialogue amid regional conflicts
The Turkish president said ongoing crises in the region and around the world make continued coordination between Ankara and Washington essential.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Türkiye and the United States must maintain close dialogue given the range of conflicts and crises facing the region and the wider world, speaking at a gala event in New York.
"Conflicts, wars and crises that we face in our region and the world require Türkiye and America to remain in close dialogue," Erdogan said, according to Turkish media.
The remarks were made during the same New York appearance in which Erdogan also called for the two NATO allies to move past unspecified barriers in their relationship. Türkiye occupies a strategically significant position bordering several conflict zones, including Syria and the wider Middle East, and has positioned itself as a mediator in a number of regional disputes in recent years.
Erdogan's emphasis on continued dialogue with Washington comes as both countries navigate a complex set of overlapping regional issues, including the situation in Syria, tensions in the eastern Mediterranean, and broader instability across the Middle East.
The Turkish president did not detail specific topics discussed during his engagements in New York beyond the general call for sustained coordination between the two governments.
Erdogan's visit to New York coincided with the annual gathering of world leaders for the United Nations General Assembly, a period that typically includes a wave of bilateral meetings and diplomatic engagements among heads of state.
