In Ethiopia, Tigrayan rebels say they are repelling a "federal forces invasion"
The Tigrayan Defense Forces claim to have taken control of Mekelle Airport, the capital of the state, as a new alliance of armed movements has formed against federal authorities.
The Tigray rebels say they are repelling an "invasion" by Ethiopian federal forces, amid renewed tensions in the north of the country.
The Tigrayan Defence Forces also announced that they had taken control of Makale airport, the capital of Tigray State, a strategic infrastructure for the region.
Three days earlier, seven armed movements active in different parts of the country had announced the creation of an alliance aimed at overthrowing the Ethiopian federal authorities.
This escalation comes in a country already marked by several years of regional conflicts, including the Tigray war that killed tens of thousands of people between 2020 and 2022.
The Ethiopian federal government did not immediately communicate publicly on the situation at Makale airport or on the new alliance of armed movements.
