Earl Spencer has reaffirmed his claim that King Charles told him "rest assured, we'll forget her soon enough" in reference to Diana, Princess of Wales, days after her death in 1997, saying he stands by his account of the conversation.

The alleged remarks were disclosed in Charles Spencer's memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, which is currently being serialised in the Daily Mail.

Buckingham Palace responded to the claim with what was described as an extraordinary statement, suggesting that Diana's brother may have misremembered the events surrounding the alleged phone call. According to the palace statement, "the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory in ways others do not recognise."

Earl Spencer has rejected the suggestion that his memory of the conversation is inaccurate, maintaining that he is telling the truth about what was said to him.

The dispute centres on a private conversation Spencer says took place shortly after Diana's death in a car crash in Paris in August 1997. The claims have drawn significant public attention given the sensitivity of the subject matter and the parties involved.

The Guardian has reported on the exchange between Earl Spencer and Buckingham Palace, noting the unusual nature of the palace's public response to the memoir's claims.
