Dozens Dead in India and Nepal After Torrential Rains

Torrential rains and landslides have killed at least 56 people over three days in northeastern India and the state of Uttar Pradesh, with authorities in neighboring Nepal reporting 14 additional deaths from the same weather system.

Officials in both countries announced the death tolls, describing widespread damage from heavy rainfall that triggered landslides in affected areas. The scale of destruction has added to a difficult period for the region, which has faced repeated severe weather events in recent months.

The affected areas in India span the country's northeast as well as Uttar Pradesh, indicating that the rains and their consequences were spread across a wide geographic area rather than concentrated in a single region.

In Nepal, the reported deaths come after the country experienced a separate catastrophic flooding event a month earlier that left thousands missing, meaning this latest weather system compounds an already difficult recovery effort in parts of the country.

Authorities in both nations have not yet detailed the full extent of infrastructure damage or the number of people displaced, but the combined death toll of at least 70 across the two countries underscores the severity of the rains that struck the region.
