Discord Rolls Out Global Automatic Age Estimation System

Discord has begun rolling out a new global age assurance system that automatically estimates users' ages based on account activity, seven months after the company paused an earlier verification effort following criticism from its user base.

Starting immediately, the system is being deployed in every country except Australia and the United Kingdom, where separate regulatory requirements for online age verification already apply. Rather than asking users to submit identification or complete a verification step, Discord says it will assign accounts to an estimated age group using what it describes as "multiple account signals" — patterns drawn from how an account is used rather than documents supplied by the user.

Accounts that the system believes belong to younger users will be placed under additional restrictions, though Discord has not published the full technical details of how its signals-based estimation works or how accurately it can distinguish between age groups. The approach marks a shift from the company's earlier attempt at age verification, which drew significant backlash from users over privacy concerns before being paused.

Age assurance has become a growing compliance issue for social and messaging platforms as governments in multiple countries move to require stronger protections for younger users online, including in Australia and the UK, whose distinct regulatory regimes are the reason Discord is excluding them from this rollout for now.

Discord has not detailed what happens to users who believe they have been misclassified by the system, or whether an appeals process exists for accounts placed under age-related restrictions. The company's previous pause suggests it is likely to monitor user reaction to this rollout closely.
