Detroit Show Highlights Georgia O'Keeffe's Urban and Architectural Works
A new exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts spotlights the American artist's lesser-known paintings of skyscrapers, barns and smokestacks, offering what curators call a fresh perspective on her career.
The Detroit Institute of Arts has opened a new exhibition titled "Georgia O'Keeffe: Architecture," focusing on the American artist's paintings of urban and rural structures rather than the flowers, bones and landscapes for which she is most widely known, according to the Guardian.
The show features nearly 40 works and was overseen by curator Ben Coleman, according to the report. Coleman said he wanted to present a different narrative about an artist whose imagery is often considered familiar.
"I wanted to tell a new story about an artist who is so familiar," Coleman said, as quoted by the Guardian. "We can take a fresh look at works that O'Keeffe always considered essential and celebrate them in the way she wanted to."
The exhibition includes O'Keeffe's depictions of New York City skyscrapers alongside paintings of farmhouses and barns, subjects the Guardian describes as seemingly at odds with the organic, curving forms typically associated with her more famous works.
According to the report, the exhibition aims to reposition these architectural studies as central to understanding O'Keeffe's artistic vision, rather than as a departure from it.
