Interethnic clashes kill 26 in disputed Abyei region
The border region between Sudan and South Sudan is experiencing an escalation of violence between communities.
At least 26 people were killed in interethnic clashes in the Abyei region, according to the UN peacekeeping mission. Killings within two ethnic groups have "exacerbated tensions between the two communities," says the UN mission for the territory.
Abyei, a border region disputed between Sudan and South Sudan, has remained an unstable zone since the 2011 split. Communal tensions there persist chronically.
