Democrats have criticized President Donald Trump's suggestion that New Mexico be renamed "New America," accusing him of attempting to shift public attention away from an unpopular military conflict with Iran and ongoing inflation concerns, according to The Guardian.
New Mexico's governor pushed back on the proposal, noting that the state has held its name since before the founding of the United States, the report said.
The suggestion follows a pattern set by the Trump administration, which moved to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America" within hours of Trump's return to office in January 2025, according to the report.
In August, amid escalating trade tensions between the United States and Canada, the administration also moved to rename Lake Ontario as "Lake America," The Guardian reported.
