Democrats in Maine have accused Republican Senator Susan Collins of corruption after ProPublica, an investigative news outlet, reported that the FBI had proposed investigating her over allegations she accepted bribes, before Donald Trump derailed the inquiry.

According to the ProPublica report, in the run-up to Collins’s successful 2020 re-election bid, the head of her political action committee had solicited a campaign donation from contracting firm Navatek. The firm reportedly demanded assurances of future government business in return for the contribution.

Collins has strongly denied the allegation, calling the bribery claim “categorically false.”

The report has become a flashpoint in the race for Collins’s Senate seat, which Democrats view as pivotal to their hopes of winning control of the chamber in the November 3 midterm election.

The ProPublica investigation raises questions about the FBI’s decision-making process and whether political considerations played a role in the fate of the proposed inquiry, though the full details of that internal process were not disclosed in the report.

Collins, one of the Senate’s longest-serving Republicans, has not faced formal charges related to the allegations, and the matter remains a subject of political dispute rather than a confirmed criminal case.
