Organised crime groups in West Yorkshire are using social media platforms to recruit students and other vulnerable young people to act as "parcel mules," offering cash payments in exchange for moving packages that contain illegal drugs, prohibited weapons, stolen goods and laundered cash, according to reporting on the scheme.

Platforms including Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok and Facebook have been used by criminal networks to approach potential recruits, often targeting students who may be drawn in by the promise of quick, easy money without fully understanding the legal risks involved.

Parcel mule schemes typically work by having recruits receive, hold or transport packages on behalf of organised crime groups, distancing the principal offenders from the illicit goods and making it harder for law enforcement to trace the operation back to its organisers.

Authorities and community groups have warned that young people recruited into such schemes can face serious criminal charges, including for drug trafficking or handling stolen property, even if they were unaware of the full contents of the packages they moved. The recruitment tactic mirrors patterns seen in other forms of criminal exploitation, where social media is used to identify and groom potential participants before drawing them into more serious offending.
