Researchers analyzing the deadly flooding that struck Nepal and China say climate change was a destabilizing factor, according to the World Weather Attribution group. The analysis points to warming temperatures, permafrost degradation, glacier thinning and retreat, increased rainfall, and unusually warm conditions as likely contributors to the disaster.

The flooding may have been preconditioned by a 2015 earthquake in the region, which researchers suggest could have weakened terrain and made it more susceptible to the effects of climate-driven changes, according to the assessment.
