Ciryl Gane was officially promoted to UFC heavyweight champion on Saturday, September 19, becoming the first French fighter to hold a UFC title, according to RFI.

RFI reported that the promotion followed the withdrawal of Tom Aspinall, who was unable to return to the cage because of an eye injury. Despite the achievement, RFI noted that Gane faces criticism over the legitimacy of a title won without a fight, and that one more step remains before he is considered a "true" champion.
