China and the Philippines have made conflicting claims over a fresh vessel "collision" in the disputed South China Sea, according to Anadolu Agency.

The incident occurred around the disputed Xianbin Jiao, also known as Escoda Shoal, an area that has repeatedly become a flashpoint between the two countries in recent years amid overlapping territorial claims in the South China Sea.

Both Beijing and Manila issued statements blaming the other side for the collision, though the exact circumstances of the incident, including the vessels involved and the extent of any damage, were not immediately clear from the conflicting accounts, according to Anadolu Agency.

The South China Sea has long been a source of tension between China and several Southeast Asian nations, including the Philippines, Vietnam, and Malaysia, which contest Beijing's expansive territorial claims over the waterway. China claims sovereignty over most of the sea through what it calls the "nine-dash line," a claim that overlaps with the exclusive economic zones of its neighbors.

China, for its part, has accused Philippine vessels of trespassing into what it regards as its territorial waters.
