China Calls on Iran and US to Revive Diplomatic Pact, Reopen Hormuz Strait
Ahead of a planned summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump, Beijing's top diplomat Wang Yi urged Tehran and Washington to return to a diplomatic agreement and keep the Strait of Hormuz open.
China's top diplomat, Wang Yi, has called on Iran and the United States to return to a previously agreed pact and ensure the Strait of Hormuz remains open, according to a report by Anadolu Agency.
The remarks were made during a meeting between Wang and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, ahead of an anticipated summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump, the report said.
Wang was quoted as saying that a prolonged conflict between the United States and Iran is "not in common interest" of either party or the broader international community.
According to the report, Wang urged both Tehran and Washington to return to what was described as the Islamabad pact, without providing further detail on the specific terms or history of the agreement referenced.
The Chinese diplomat also called for the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil shipments, to remain open, the report said. The strait, which separates Iran from the Arabian Peninsula, is a vital route through which a significant share of the world's seaborne oil trade passes.
The meeting between Wang and Araghchi comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States and as China prepares for high-level engagement between its president and the US leader.
