China Becomes Rwanda's Top Export Market After Tariff Cuts, but Sanitary Standards Pose New Hurdle

China has become Rwanda's leading export destination, according to a report by France 24, with the country accounting for 26% of Rwanda's total exports in the first quarter of 2026, up from less than 5% a year earlier.
France 24 attributed the sharp rise to Beijing's removal of tariffs on nearly all Rwandan products, part of broader trade measures aimed at expanding market access for goods from Rwanda into China's market of 1.4 billion consumers.
Despite the tariff cuts, the report, by Aurore Bayoud, said that on the ground, gaining access to Chinese consumers depends less on tariff levels than on meeting sanitary standards required by Chinese authorities.
The report did not specify which Rwandan products have driven the export growth or detail the specific sanitary requirements exporters must meet, but noted that compliance with these standards has emerged as the primary obstacle for Rwandan producers seeking to capitalize on the newly opened market.
The shift marks a significant change in Rwanda's trade profile, with China rising from a minor trading partner to the country's top export destination within the span of a year, according to the figures cited in the report.
