Charity Leader Highlights Music Education's Impact and Fragile Funding in Response to Guardian Article

Two readers, including a Cardiff charity trustee, write to The Guardian to describe both the benefits and precariousness of music education for working-class young people

Two readers have written to The Guardian in response to an article by musician Robert Ames, in which he argued that opportunities in music are increasingly closing off for working-class musicians. The letters, from Elizabeth Williams and Luke Madams, were published as part of the newspaper's letters section on 15 September.

Williams, who chairs the board of trustees of Making Music, Changing Lives (MMCL), a Cardiff-based charity, wrote that she has witnessed "both the transformative power of music education and the fragility of its provision," according to the published letter.

According to Williams, MMCL was established in 2009 to provide musical opportunities for children and young people in the low-income communities of Ely and Caerau in Cardiff. She wrote that the charity currently loans instruments free of charge to around 40 young people, who also receive free or heavily subsidised weekly tuition from qualified teachers and the chance to play and perform in an orchestra.

Williams said the charity additionally organises school holiday projects, concerts for local schools, and provides free tickets to professional concerts for young participants.

The letters were written in response to an article published by The Guardian on 9 September, in which Robert Ames, who said he co-founded an orchestra 18 years ago, argued that he had seen doors close for working-class musicians over that period.

Details of the content of Luke Madams's letter were not included in the excerpt reviewed for this report.
