Carney Tells European Parliament Canada Seeks Deeper Ties With EU Beyond Trade

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed the European Parliament, urging the European Union to deepen its partnership with Canada beyond existing trade arrangements, according to France 24.

In his speech, Carney said Ottawa wants to expand cooperation with the EU in several areas, including energy, artificial intelligence, space and what he described as payment sovereignty, France 24 reported.

Carney also proposed that Canada join Erasmus, the EU's student exchange programme, as part of broader efforts to strengthen ties between Canada and the bloc, the report said.

France 24's Dave Keating said the push reflects a wider Canadian strategy to build stronger alliances beyond the United States, without seeking to join the EU's single market.

According to the report, questions remain over how Canada's ambitions for closer cooperation with the EU could be translated into concrete agreements or policy action.
