Canada's Retaliatory Tariffs on US Goods Take Effect Amid Trade Dispute
Counter-measures covering billions of dollars in American imports follow President Trump's announcement of 50% tariffs on Canadian goods, deepening tensions between Ottawa and Washington.
Canada's retaliatory tariffs on American imports took effect at 12:01am on Tuesday, according to The Guardian, escalating a trade dispute between the United States and Canada.
The counter-measures, which range from 15% to 50%, apply to $20bn worth of imports from the US, the report said.
The tariffs target several sectors including steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics, according to the report. These industries have been among those most affected by existing US tariffs, The Guardian reported.
The retaliatory measures follow an announcement by US President Donald Trump of 50% tariffs on Canadian goods, the report said, further straining relations between Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
The Guardian described the situation as marked by intensifying tensions between the two leaders as the trade dispute has grown.
