Burglary at Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer: Two Paintings Stolen
The mayor of the town said two burglars broke into the museum Tuesday morning, making off with four paintings before abandoning two of them during a police chase.
Two paintings by artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir were stolen Tuesday at the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer, near Nice, according to statements from the town's mayor reported by France 24.
According to the mayor, two individuals broke into the museum shortly before six in the morning. They took four paintings before fleeing the scene.
Pursued by police, the burglars abandoned two of the stolen canvases during their escape, according to the same reports. Two artworks therefore remain unaccounted for at this time.
The total value of the artworks in the museum before the burglary was estimated at several million euros, according to information cited by France 24, although no precise valuation of the paintings actually stolen has been disclosed so far.
An investigation has been opened to determine the exact circumstances of the theft and attempt to locate the perpetrators as well as the missing artworks. No information about possible arrests has been released at this time.
