Actor Calista Flockhart has spoken about how her starring role in the 1990s television series Ally McBeal became closely tied to her public identity, according to an interview published by The Guardian.

Flockhart told the paper she was performing in a stage production of Chekhov's Three Sisters in New York when she received the script for the show, written by David E. Kelley, and flew to Los Angeles to audition. She said moving to Los Angeles was a difficult adjustment after being settled in New York, and recalled being too nervous to drive on LA freeways for a year.
