Burnham Signals Openness to Lifting Football Alcohol Ban

The prime minister says the 1985 law barring fans from drinking alcohol in view of the pitch amounts to discrimination against football supporters.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has signaled he wants to revisit the long-standing ban on alcohol consumption in football stands, calling the restriction discriminatory, according to the BBC.

The ban, in place since 1985, prevents supporters from drinking alcohol within sight of the pitch at football matches in England and Wales, a rule introduced in response to hooliganism concerns decades ago.

Burnham said he opposes the law, arguing there is a case for removing it so that football fans are treated the same as supporters of other sports, where similar restrictions do not generally apply.

For supporters, the prospect of change could mean an end to a rule that has shaped the matchday experience at English and Welsh football grounds for close to four decades.

Football authorities and policing bodies have not yet publicly responded to Burnham’s comments, and any formal move to amend the law would likely involve consultation with clubs, supporter groups and safety officials.

The debate over the alcohol ban has resurfaced periodically over the years, with advocates for lifting it pointing to improved stadium security and changing fan culture since the restriction was introduced.
