British climber, 28, dies in fall in northern Spain

A 28-year-old British climber has died after falling while descending from the summit of a mountain in northern Spain, according to a report by The Guardian.

The mountaineer fell about 61 metres (200ft) down a vertical gully on the east side of Torrecerredo, the highest peak of the Picos de Europa mountain range, local law enforcement told the outlet.

His body was recovered roughly 20 metres below the summit, according to the report. The Picos de Europa range, spanning parts of northern Spain, is popular with hikers and climbers but includes technical routes with steep, exposed terrain.

The report did not name the climber or provide further details on the circumstances that led to the fall, including whether he was climbing alone or as part of a group, or what recovery operation was required to retrieve his body from the mountainside.

Fatal accidents involving foreign climbers are not uncommon in the range given its challenging peaks, and local authorities in the region regularly carry out mountain rescue operations for hikers and climbers in difficulty.
