Beck on his creative process: 'I just keep going down into the mine'

Beck answered fan questions in The Guardian about his creative longevity and artistic evolution. When asked what keeps him performing since the late 1980s, he said he has "spent a lot of my time trying to create a body of work, and out of that, maybe there's a few songs at the end that are not bad," comparing the process to mining.

On his tendency to alternate between musical styles, Beck indicated that "lonesome" work feels closer to his core self, but says the funkier side "gets me out of my shell, stops me from being a little too ponderous." He noted that listener preferences have shifted, with audiences now preferring his introspective material over upbeat tracks, and joked with Mark Ronson about the rarity of creating a "wedding song" like "Uptown Funk."
