Bardella Denounces 'Total War' Against Rassemblement National After Antisemitism Allegations

Rassemblement National president Jordan Bardella denounced what he called "the beginnings of a total war" against his party on Tuesday, a day after the investigative outlet Mediapart published a report accusing the party of having tolerated antisemitic remarks between 2013 and 2015.

Mediapart's investigation, for its part, described what it called "the staggering violence of the far right" and pointed to "threatening remarks of great gravity" it attributed to party figurehead Marine Le Pen, in response to the publication of its findings.

A challenge to the party's image

The exchange comes at a moment when Rassemblement National has sought to present a more moderate public image, a strategy commonly referred to in French political commentary as "dediabolisation," or de-demonisation. Mediapart's allegations, and the sharp reactions they have provoked from both sides, raise questions about how effectively that strategy has held.

Bardella's framing of the dispute as an orchestrated attack against his party reflects a defensive posture common when parties face damaging investigative reporting, casting the allegations as part of a broader campaign rather than addressing the specific claims in detail. Mediapart, in turn, doubled down on its characterisation of the party's rhetoric as violent and threatening.
