Bachelet Withdraws From Race to Lead United Nations
Former Chilean president cites gratitude to Brazil and Mexico as she exits contest for UN's top post
Former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet has withdrawn from the campaign to become the next Secretary-General of the United Nations, according to a report by Russian state news agency TASS.
In a statement cited by TASS, Bachelet thanked Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum for nominating her and for their support during the bid.
TASS did not provide further details on the reasons behind Bachelet's withdrawal or the current state of the broader race to succeed the incumbent UN Secretary-General.
Bachelet, who served two terms as Chile's president, has also held senior international roles, including as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Her candidacy had been backed by two of Latin America's largest economies before her decision to step aside.
