Aztec Codex Returns to Mexico on Loan From France
A 16th-century pictorial manuscript chronicling Aztec history went on display in Mexico City, nearly 200 years after it left the country, as France's National Library lends the prized document amid Mexican calls for its permanent return.

A revered 16th-century Mexican codex, which recounts the history of the Aztecs through pictograms, went on public display in Mexico City on Thursday, according to France 24. The manuscript's return marks the first time it has been shown in the country in nearly two centuries.
The codex was taken to France many decades ago and has remained in the custody of France's National Library, which has held it for more than a century, France 24 reported.
According to the report, the loan was arranged to mark 200 years of diplomatic relations between Mexico and France. The library agreed to send the document to Mexico City temporarily as part of commemorations tied to the bilateral anniversary.
France 24 noted that Mexican officials are pushing for the manuscript to be permanently returned to the country, rather than remain on loan under French ownership. The report did not specify a timeline for when the codex will be sent back to France following the exhibition.
The manuscript is considered one of the significant surviving pictorial records documenting Aztec history, according to the report.
