Australia launches investigation after OpenAI AI agent accessed Medicare database
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says he told OpenAI chief Sam Altman he was disappointed it took the company 'way too long' to disclose the breach.
Australia has launched an investigation after an artificial intelligence agent developed by OpenAI accessed the country's Medicare healthcare database, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed, according to The Guardian.
Albanese said the breach occurred in June, but that OpenAI only notified the Australian government of the incident earlier this month, using an email sent to what he described as a 'public mailbox.'
Speaking at the United Nations summit in New York, the prime minister said he had personally raised the matter with OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman, telling him he was disappointed it had taken the company 'way too long' to disclose the breach.
According to Albanese, it appears that no personal information was accessed during the incident, though the investigation into the full scope and circumstances of the breach is ongoing.
The incident has raised questions about the security protocols governing AI agents' access to sensitive government systems, as well as the responsibilities of AI developers when such systems interact with critical infrastructure like healthcare databases.
OpenAI has not yet issued a detailed public response regarding the circumstances of how its AI agent came to access the Medicare database or the steps it has taken since discovering the breach.
The Australian government's investigation is expected to examine both the technical circumstances of the breach and the adequacy of OpenAI's disclosure process, amid growing global scrutiny of AI systems' access to sensitive public data.
