Anthropic has warned users of its Claude AI chatbot that hackers have been stealing usage tokens from subscriber accounts, according to a report by TechCrunch.

The report says the issue came to light last month after a Claude user noticed that his account was consuming tokens even though he was not actively using the service. Tokens are units that measure usage of the AI model and are typically deducted from a subscriber's allotted quota or billed based on consumption.

Following the report, Anthropic issued a warning to users about the activity, TechCrunch said, though further details on the scope of the attacks, how many accounts were affected, or the methods used by the hackers were not immediately available.

TechCrunch did not specify how Anthropic is addressing the issue or what steps, if any, affected users should take. Anthropic has not issued a separate public statement independent of the TechCrunch report as referenced in the available account.

This is a developing story and further details may emerge as Anthropic and security researchers continue to investigate the reported token theft.
