In Berlin, the left-wing party Die Linke is leading in the polls, RFI reports. Its lead candidate, Elif Eralp, could thus become mayor of the city.
According to RFI, an Elif Eralp victory would be an unprecedented event in two respects: both in terms of her party's political leanings and her Turkish origins, the candidate being of foreign descent.
RFI notes that to govern, Die Linke would, however, need to form a coalition with several other left-wing parties, a scenario that remains to be confirmed based on Sunday's election results.
