Albanese rules out EU membership push as Australia prioritizes Indo-Pacific ties

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese responded to questions about Australia joining the EU as an associate member, following Canada's recent offer to become the bloc's first associate member. Albanese emphasized geographic and strategic differences, stating "we're a long way from Europe, of course," and highlighted Australia's distinct regional commitments through ASEAN and the Pacific Island Forum.

Albanese said Australia's priority regarding Europe is pursuing a free trade agreement with the EU, which he said has already yielded results including strengthened eSafety laws that have compelled social media organizations to provide information to the eSafety Commissioner.
