AI Developer Launches Open-Source Clones of Adobe's Creative Cloud Apps
The free, Opus-built alternatives take direct aim at Adobe's flagship creative software but remain far from finished.

An AI-focused developer has released a set of open-source applications designed to mimic the core functions of Adobe's Creative Cloud suite, built with the help of Anthropic's Opus AI model and distributed free of charge.
The project positions itself as a direct challenge to Adobe's dominance in creative software, offering alternatives to tools used for photo editing, design and other creative work. Unlike Adobe's subscription-based Creative Cloud, the new applications are open source, meaning their underlying code is publicly available for anyone to inspect, modify or build upon.
The developer behind the effort has framed the release in sweeping terms, suggesting that AI-assisted development is fundamentally changing how creative software gets built and who gets to build it. The implication is that the traditional model of large companies spending years and significant resources to develop polished creative tools may no longer be the only path to producing usable software.
Despite the ambition behind the project, the alternatives are described as ambitious but far from finished, reflecting the current limits of AI-assisted coding projects: a working prototype is one thing, but matching the depth, stability and polish of software refined over decades is another.
Still, the release underscores a broader trend in which AI coding tools are lowering the barrier to building complex software, enabling individual developers or small teams to attempt projects that would once have required large engineering organizations. Whether these particular tools mature into viable replacements for Adobe's products, or remain a proof of concept, is likely to become clearer as development continues.
