Abdul-Malik Olajuwon, a top-60 basketball recruit and the son of NBA Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon, has committed to SMU, he told ESPN on Thursday.
The commitment adds a notable name to SMU's recruiting class, with Olajuwon carrying one of the most recognizable surnames in basketball history. His father, Hakeem Olajuwon, is widely regarded as one of the greatest centers to play in the NBA, winning two championships with the Houston Rockets during a career that led to his enshrinement in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
A recruit in his own right
Abdul-Malik's ranking among the top 60 recruits nationally signals that he has built his own profile as a prospect, independent of his family name. Specific details about his position, measurements, or the other programs that recruited him were not included in the initial report.
SMU's basketball program will be looking to add talent as it continues to build its roster for the coming seasons. Landing a top-60 recruit gives the program a boost in its recruiting efforts within a competitive conference landscape.
No additional comment from Olajuwon, his family, or SMU's coaching staff was included in the original report, and further details about his decision-making process or official signing timeline were not disclosed.
