Women’s rights activist Gloria Steinem has passed away at age 92.

The feminist icon who became leader of the women's liberation movement in the US died on Wednesday at the age of 92, according to her foundation.
At a time when women were largely limited to domestic roles, Steinem challenged gender stereotypes and championed feminist ideals like equality, sisterhood and reproductive freedom.

The trailblazing feminist spoke out for the legalisation of abortion, same-sex marriage and equal pay for women - but her activism was not without backlash.
